Year In Review 2010

As we end the year that was 2010, CFEO is immensely grateful to God for what has been achieved in the past 12 months.

In January we were able to secure introductory training for our volunteers in the Freedom In Christ Ministries curriculum.

From February to May we ran the empowering pre-release module, Preparing for Purpose, at the Youth Training Centre. This was the third and final module in our moral and spiritual literacy courses at that institution.

In March we linked with Mr. Ian Ivey of New Zealand to run a Foresighting workshop with the lads in the Preparing for Purpose course as a means of exposing them to a novel and effective method of setting goals for their post-institutional lives.

In April, we hosted Ms. Merilyn “Emmy” Wilson of Alpha International as she participated in a local Alpha training arranged by the local Steering Committee for Alpha. After the training sessions for churches, we were able to take Emmy to several meetings with key stakeholders in the church and penal sectors. These stakeholders included the Penal Reform and Transformation Unit, the Trinidad and Tobago Prisons Service and the Anglican diocese of Trinidad and Tobago. These meetings lay a platform for several important activities which would transpire later in the year.

In May, we had an opportunity to address church leaders from 2 key organisations in the country – the Evangelical Council of Trinidad and Tobago and the Church of the Nazarene – on the role of the Church in caring for offenders and crime survivors.

June saw the long-awaited graduation of the lads in our moral and spiritual literacy classes. Some 39 lads attended the function which also involved a Father’s Day celebration. The media and dignitaries who attended were in high praise for the function and the change produced in the lives of the lads from participation in the courses.

Early in June we invited staff of the Youth Training centre to undergo training in Youth Alpha so they could appreciate the use of various modes to impart one curriculum. We also met with the Manager of the St. Michael’s School for Boys and agreed to train their staff to run Youth Alpha at the institution.

In June as well we participated in the Alpha Americas Conference in Chicago as part of the local Alpha delegation. There we met with Youth Alpha trainers from the UK and the USA and took part in talks to bring a Global Alpha Training in Youth Alpha to Trinidad and Tobago (which we hope will occur in early 2011).

In July we commenced training of the St. Michael’s school staff as well as our YTC volunteers to run Youth Alpha. These sessions ran into August.

September saw the launch of Youth Alpha at St. Michael’s School as well as a new cycle commence at the Youth Training Centre.

In October both institutions held their Holy Spirit sessions each of which was highly successful. YTC ended its Youth Alpha course in late October.

November was extremely busy and fruitful as months of preparation culminated in 2 Caring for Ex-Offenders Training Days in Trinidad and in Tobago respectively. The exercise led to the registration of several faith based organisations to receive further training in caring fro ex-offenders, crime survivors and other marginalised and vulnerable people groups.

St. Michael’s School concluded its Youth Alpha course in November and certificates were distributed to the participants at a Boys luncheon held in December.

With all that has transpired for this year, CFEO looks forward with great anticipation for what the Lord will accomplish in 2011.

We have a steady platform from which to launch forward by His Spirit and look forward to more doors being opened, increased partnerships and continued favour.

Thanks to all agencies and individuals who partnered with us in 2010. Earmarked for special mention are Alpha International, Caring for Ex-Offenders UK, CURB, Prison Fellowship Trinidad and Tobago, COPCAM, the T&T Prisons Service, the Penal Reform and Transformation Unit, the Tobago House of Assembly, NEXT Corporation, Youth Training Centre and St. Michael’s School for Boys.

God’s blessings to all for 2011!
